Los Angeles is regarded by the world as the center of the American entertainment industry. Beverly Hills is regarded by the world as the home of all the glamorous people who work in the industry…the ultimate company town. The allure of its pristine and opulent homes, and the proximity to actors and executives in film, TV, music and sports, make this a prestigious and sought after community, both by “regular” people, and those who seek their social and business counterparts. For those looking for status, luxury and an unparalled quality of life, this is the place to be.
Long before Beverly Hills earned it’s reputation as home to Hollywood stars, it was a sprawling ranch owned by an colorful early American feminist, Maria Rita, who let her livestock graze freely in the grassy hills, but gathered them for a festive yearly rodeo. The land passed through many transitions, including a sale for 4000 dollars, and was used for cattle, then sheep, then oil drilling. In the early 1900’s, after failing in oil, Burton Green had the vision to develop the land for residences, encouraging film stars and captains of industry to use the open space available to build the homes of their dreams. To support this plan, he was responsible for building the wide streets and boulevards still prominent today. Perhaps the most significant progress was made after the building of the still famous Beverly Hills Hotel, which became the center of the community, and a jewel in the west. Soon after, the most famous stars of the time, Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford, built their dream home, Pickfair, and others soon followed: Charlie Chaplin, Gloria Swanson, Marion Davies, Buster Keaton, Rudolf Valentino, and Will Rogers who became the first mayor of Beverly Hills and was responsible for launching a successful campaign to fight annexation into Los Angeles, making it an independent unincorporated city to this day.
From the roaring1920’s to the present day, Beverly Hills has been a place to see and be seen. Rodeo Drive, has become one of the most famous shopping streets in the world, and is a destination for tourists and stars alike. The Golden Triangle surrounding Rodeo Drive offers a wide range of dining, from the ultimate chic, to the neighborhood friendly. The galleries are abundant and full of collections of highly sought after artists.
Many residents of Beverly Hills are focused on quality of life issues that go beyond leisure and status. Many modest homes and apartments make it possible to bring economic diversity to the community. Some seek to have a Beverly Hills address in order to take advantage of the fine schools, excellent police and fire departments, sprawling parks and safe, palm lined streets.
